Shokz OpenFit Air 2 Ditches Touch Controls as Bluetooth 6.1 Closes Tracking Gap
About this product

The OpenFit Air 2 takes the air conduction route, pointing a conventional speaker at the open ear rather than blocking the canal. It captures more of the audio quality possible from a purpose-built driver, but faces its own physics constraint: without a sealed cavity to reflect low frequencies back toward the eardrum, bass energy disperses.
The most immediately practical engineering change on the OpenFit Air 2 is the switch to pressure-sensitive buttons from capacitive touch controls. Capacitive touch sensors detect any skin contact regardless of intent, which means sweat, water droplets, rain, or stray hair can all register as inputs. Replacing them with buttons that require physical mechanical force effectively eliminates the class of false triggers that interrupt music during runs and workouts.
The hardware profile reflects meaningful refinement over the first-generation OpenFit Air. At 7.2 grams (0.25 oz) per earbud, the OpenFit Air 2 is the lightest product in the OpenFit family. The charging case has been redesigned to be 10.5% smaller, while the earbuds and case combined are 17.6% lighter than the prior generation — a genuine reduction for a product category where users often carry the case in a gym bag or jacket pocket throughout the day. The 0.75 mm Ni-Ti alloy frame (nickel-titanium, also called Nitinol) in the ear hook maintains structural flexibility without permanent deformation — the same shape-memory alloy used in medical devices and precision hardware — keeping the fit consistent across the temperature and humidity swings of an active use session.
